The Netflix X Balmain Capsule Collection
When I opened my email this morning while sipping my coffee, I thought I was imagining things. I stared at the heading of the email I had received from Balmain in disbelief. I don’t know how long I sat mute at my desk, but eventually, I opened the email. That’s when it all began to make sense.
I haven’t seen it yet, but I‘m sure that many of you have by now. It’s a Netflix film by the name of “The Harder They Come”, directed by Jeymes Samuel. It takes place in the Old West and the cast is comprised of an all-star ensemble of some of the best African American actors: Jonathan Majors, Zazie Beetz, RJ Cyler, and Regina King. When Balmain creative director Olivier Rousteing heard about it, he wanted to be a part of the project, designing some of the looks that would become a part of costumes that would be worn in the film. His current line of wares is inspired by both the movie and America’s Old West, debuting today (November 3) at the same time as the Netflix feature. Olivier expressed his reason for his designs in the quote below in an interview with WWD.
“It was such an interesting challenge for me. It’s another way of presenting fashion. It was also interesting for me as a French designer to get inspired by the American West.”
