You can’t have a war without a war chest, and I’m in need of one. Now, and in the future, I’ll be selling Neuerotica merchandise from this site, but the American economy is in the shitter, and most of us would rather spend our cash on milk and gas than a “cool” t-shirt, so I’m not sure how it will pan out. There may also be affiliate ads, which should help. It’s not as easy as it was a decade ago to earn a dollar on the internet. Back then, I didn’t have to seek advertisers; they came knocking on my door instead. The same was true when I published a luxury e-mag just before I started Neuerotica.
One of my old sites used to have a donation block, but it felt like begging. No one ever contributed a dime, anyway.
For now, whatever cash I bring in will be spent on maintaining Neuerotica. Currently, the cost of maintaining it is somewhat manageable. Most of the images I use to customize Neuerotica are actual photographs or digital art. The AI-generated images I use for memes are free, but the editing software I use to make the badass memes they are (no AI, of course) is paid monthly. There are other things I intend to do with Neuerotica that will eventually increase its running costs. I used to make promotional videos announcing new interviews with our subjects, promo videos for my magazine, and retrospectives. I’ve been considering doing so again, but the cost is more than I can handle at the moment. The promos I make now are cheap and less professional-looking than the ones I’ve made in the past. Eventually, I’d like to do a podcast and have live interviews too.
I mention this because there may be questions about why I chose to request contributing authors rather than hire writers and editors. In the past, I had a small “staff”, but (and I don’t blame them for taking advantage of the opportunities), they have moved on to work in mainstream media. For now, it’s just me and my big brain with big ideas trying to do the work of at least five people.
If in the future it becomes feasible for me to hire writers, I will do it, and I’ll announce it in a future newsletter.
